Frequently Asked Questions

What is New World Enamel made of?

New World Enamel products are vitreous (glass) enamel coated on a steel core. Double-coated for durability. The glass coating is non-reactive, food-safe, and easy to clean. The steel core makes the plates oven safe but means they cannot be microwaved.

Is the Rice Plate oven safe?

Yes — oven safe up to 200 °C. Suitable for baking, roasting, and reheating in a conventional oven. Avoid sudden temperature changes (cold plate into hot oven, or vice versa) to prevent thermal shock cracking the enamel.

Is the Rice Plate dishwasher safe?

Yes — dishwasher safe. Hand washing with a soft sponge preserves the enamel finish longer.

What is the Rice Plate used for?

Used across South Africa for everyday meals — rice, pap, samp, curry, stew, breyani, salad. The deep plate shape works well for both saucy main dishes and dry rice dishes. Also used for camping, outdoor catering, and traditional family-style serving.

Why does my enamel plate have small black spots or imperfections?

New World Enamel products are individually handmade and fired in a kiln. Small black spots, minor surface scratches, and slight pattern misalignment are normal characteristics of the handmade firing process — they do not affect the use, safety, or longevity of the plate. We consider these the fingerprint of authentic South African handmade enamelware.

Where is the New World Enamel Rice Plate manufactured?

At the Big5 Cookware factory in Thaba Nchu, Free State, South Africa. New World Enamelware has been manufactured at this facility since 1977, producing over one million pieces of cookware per year. The factory employs over 400 local workers.

Where can I buy traditional South African enamelware?

Big5 Cookware is South Africa’s traditional enamelware manufacturer. We sell direct from the factory at big5cookware.co.za and through Takealot. See our full New World Enamel range at /collections/new-world-enamel.
